Introduction:
Earth Science is a class designed to involve you in the activities of science rather than only reading about science from a textbook. During the course of this year we will explore the processes that shape the Earth and the universe, investigate relationships between many of the Earth’s systems, and discuss current global issues relevant to the Earth. The knowledge and experience gained in this class will allow you to act in an informed and intelligent way when making decisions about current issues that involve science and technology. The topics first semester will include: galaxies, stars, and the history of the universe; Earth’s place in the solar system, its orbit, and interactions with other celestial bodies; and plate tectonics, earthquakes, and volcanoes. During second semester we will study surface processes that shape the Earth; the Earth’s geologic history; resources essential to life; and the atmosphere, energy transfer, and climate. |
